Dovetail Vise-Clamping Component

December 22nd 2009

AME says its dovetail vise clamping component is useful for a variety of applications and industries, especially aerospace aluminum milling applications. Precision bushing holes are designed for quick and easy location of the vise, the company says. Other features include ½”-13 SHCS and precision dowel screws, which secure the vise on a 2″ grid system; a 15-degree dovetail angle that holds pre-machined parts securely during machining operations; and a maximum part width of 4″ or 5″. The vise is available in 5″, 8″, 12″, 16″ or 24″ lengths with as many as 12 jaws, depending on the length. Metric locating and mounting hole versions are available on request.

Compact Disk Skimmer Features Boomerang Wiper Blades

December 22nd 2009

Abanaki’s compact, disk-type oil skimmer is designed for removing unwanted tramp oils from coolants and parts washers. The skimmer features a 1/2″ × 12″ plastic disk and a 110-V, fan-cooled gear motor. A boomerang-shaped wiper blade extends over the edge of the receiving trough to provide an extra inch of wiping area and increase the capacity of the skimmer. Also, the “no drip” wiper holder system is designed to prevent oil from dripping.

The disk skimmer is constructed entirely of plastic, including the motor housing and frame. The durable, polymer-engineered housing prevents corrosion. Other features include capped troughs that prevent oil drips and a sealed shaft to prevent premature motor wear from oil contamination. The disk skimmers are designed for mounting on drums and in places where the water level does not fluctuate and where small oil-removal capacity is required.

CNC Lathe Designed For Heavy, Large Workpieces

December 22nd 2009

Featuring a wraparound, boxway construction, Femco’s CNC lathe model HL-55/200 is designed for heavy-duty, precision turning on larger workpieces. All mating surfaces are lined with Turcite to prevent wear. The rigid, 45-degree slant-bed construction and precision components are said to ensure consistent high accuracies and quality finishes. The lathe features a two-speed ZF gearbox for maximum metal removal at lower spindle speeds. The main spindle is equipped with a 15″ chuck and can be equipped with an optional 18″ or 21″ diameter chuck. A 35-hp Fanuc motor with a maximum spindle speed of 2,500 rpm powers the spindle. The maximum turning diameter is 24.21″, and extended turning length is 71.65″ for longer workpieces. The wide, 12-station turret employs bi-directional positioning for faster indexing times. Standard accessories include a chip conveyor and a programmable tailstock.

Chuck For Machining Cast Or Hardened Parts

December 22nd 2009

Hainbuch’s TOPlus chuck for machining cast or hardened parts is equipped with a hexagonal core made of cast resin. This makes the chuck lighter than steel chucks, resulting in lower inertia during high spindle acceleration. The resin also has a positive dampening effect to prevent component ringing during hard turning operations.

Six angled steel plates, which are cast in resin, form the chuck taper. To match this arrangement, the clamping head also has six flat outer surfaces that mate exactly with the surfaces of the chuck. Whether the chuck is open or closed, the clamping taper is completely sealed.

The reduced surface pressure and the full surface contact of the clamping segments increases the radical clamping force. In addition, the large clamping area is suited for raw materials, cast and forged parts. A single grease nipple provides lubrication, but this can also occur automatically through machine coding.

Air-Bearing End Mill Grinding Fixtures

December 22nd 2009

Rush Machinery offers a series of air-bearing end mill grinding fixtures that allow precision sharpening of end mills, reamers, shell mills and various other cutters. The spindle floats on a thin film of air, resulting in a smooth, even, almost frictionless grind, the company says. The fixture mounts on the company’s drill and tool grinders, and it is also available with a universal base to mount on most other tool and cutter or surface grinders, the company says.

The units feature a hard, chrome-plated and ground spindle with a 10″ stroke. Tools are held by 5C or 5-ST collets or by extension bushings for shanks ranging to 2″ (50 mm) in diameter. The fixtures allow for grinding the OD of any number of flutes, and they include a 12-position index plate for end grinding (other index plates are available). The micrometer in feed is graduated in 0.001″ (0.04 mm) of diameter. Use of the fixture allows the operator to customize end mill geometry for optimum performance.

Adjustable Supports For Heavy Parts

December 22nd 2009

Mid-America Manufacturing offers adjustable workpiece supports that are designed to withstand heavy loads. The compact devices, which are made of Stressproof 1144 steel and feature Acme-style threads, can support as much as 40,000 lbs during machining operations.

The adjustable supports can be used vertically or horizontally and are offered in four sizes ranging in heights from 2″ to 24″. Such adjustability allows faster setups by eliminating the need for shimming. Jam nuts allow them to be locked into the correct height after set up for repeatable part fixturing. The supports are available with flat, spherical, wedge, V-notch or 90-degree, pointed workpiece contacts in addition to 8″ and 12″ clamp bars.
